The wine store with passion

Wine drinking has a very, very important rule: drink what you like! But never be afraid to try something new or different. Wine drinking should be fun, free of much of the garbage that interferes with the rest of our lives. It should be a catalyst for social intercourse. It should be pleasurable and memorable, it should be savoured and discussed, it should be fun.

Chair of Judges Warren Gibson said the Maude Pinot Noir 2017 was very classy example of Pinot Noir in this year’s competition.

"A delicious and complex young wine, juicy and light on its feet” said Mr Gibson. “Showing beautiful refinement, powdery tannins and loads of controlled power. Pure class."
"Powerful and complete, that’s how we’d describe our 2017 Pinot Noir. Layers of dark Central Otago berry fruits, hints of violet, clove and cinnamon aromas are locked into this wine which screams of promise. The mouthfeel is instantly generous with the depth and breadth of flavour quite astounding. Tannins like velvet, guide the flavours through the palate giving structure and carry." Flinty and mineral, with some reductive French characters, this is rich and concentrated, yet the power is beautifully contained. "Very pale straw colour. The nose is soft with ripe, passionfruity aromas and gentle density. This has lovely harmony. Medium-bodied, the ripe passionfruit flavours are softly presented, and the palate is composed of fine phenolic textures with bright acidity. The integration, balance and togetherness is gorgeous. Luc Cowley reported that 2018 wasn’t an easy vintage, but lessons learnt from 2017 were invaluable. (2018 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc)." August 2018

"A wine that really does offer something for a large array of individuals, from someone purely interested in a nice drink to those seeking to explore the nuances of these “alternate” varieties. The Viognier certainly takes centre stage on the nose in the guise of stone fruits, candied ginger and florals. In the background...Marsanne adds slightly more exotic notes of green mango, hay and almond. The palate has a lovely medium bodied weight to it...Fruity and spicy yet dry make this an all occasions wine."

"...Dry to taste and medium-full bodied, the palate has intense aromatic aromas of raspberries and cream with bright and vibrant red florals, lifted confectionary notes and a suggestion of esters. The fruit forms a tight and concentrated core and has very good linearity, flowing along a very fine-textured line with thirst-quenching acidity enlivening the palate and providing energy. The flavours lead to a long and sustained finish. "A winemaker’s favourite. Year in, year out this traditional Shiraz Grenache blend continues to deliver beyond expectation. 2015 is no exception. Depth of character on the nose is a feature with each subsequent sniff revealing something new. Dark, earthy Shiraz notes, complimented perfectly by fruit driven, pure Grenache. The palate is equally rewarding. Rich and powerful, but not in an overbearing way. The blend of the chunkier Shiraz tannins, interwoven with the more spritely Grenache tannins enhances the texture of the wine. Flavours seem to flow infinitely on the palate and acidity is on point. This wine will definitely benefit from decanting whilst young, but don’t be afraid to let it age a few years yet in a well-conditioned cellar." D'Arenberg

" This is a good release of d'Arenberg's The High Trellis Cabernet Sauvignon. From
Cabernet Sauvignon grown in McLaren Vale and the 2015 vintage, it has a deep colour in
the glass, with aromas of jammy black fruits, earth and leaf. The oak influence is
judicious, with only old oak used. The palate is towards medium-full bodied and the
length good. This wine punches well above its weight..., and indeed, bears a
good resemblance to its elder sibling, the Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon just
reviewed. Terrific value."
