The wine store with passion

Wine drinking has a very, very important rule: drink what you like! But never be afraid to try something new or different. Wine drinking should be fun, free of much of the garbage that interferes with the rest of our lives. It should be a catalyst for social intercourse. It should be pleasurable and memorable, it should be savoured and discussed, it should be fun.

“Champagne Ayala was founded by Edmond de Ayala in 1860 and purchased by Champagne Bollinger in 2005, with the aim of re-establishing it as the grande marque (great champagne house) it was once known as. It’s wines are limited in production and therefore less well – known than bigger names, but the quality is high. It is fresh, dry (drier than most champagnes) and full-bullied with vibrant citrus and yeasty flavours. 18.5/20
Over the last 10 or so years this great dry Champagne has appeared in Multiple 5 Star reviews. Wine Spectators Top 100, Best in Class and Gold at many wines shows including our own NZ International Wine Show.

Vasse Felix Margaret River Chardonnay 2017

5 Stars & 95/100 Bob Campbell MW The Real Review, April 2019
95/100 James Halliday
93+/100 Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, February 2019

"This takes the Vasse Felix Chardonnay trio into serious wine territory. All the aspects are here, barrel fermentation in French oak, neither too much new, nor too little; the picking regime/decisions are integral to the vinification, the aim being to avoid the need to acidify; time in barrel is also an important consideration, with an increasing practice to finish maturation in tank." Beach House Selection Hawke's Bay Chardonnay 2018

5 Stars 93/100 Wine Orbit
This wine has really developed over the last few months. Filling out into a lovely big, rounded style with lots of fruit generosity and supported by toasty oak. It received a 100% malolactic fermentation in French Oak and is growing into a stunner. Drinking well now with the ability to only get better.

Little X Nelson Chardonnay 2018

94/100 Cameron Douglas MS. He said...
"An intriguing bouquet of Chardonnay with layers of flowers - honeysuckle and apple blossoms, white fleshed fruits - peach and apple and citrus of grapefruit. A light leesy quality adds shape and texture to the bouquet - fine and gently creamy. Equally fine and intriguing on the palate with flavours that mirror the nose plus acidity, oak and fine mineral attributes. A fine, balanced and well made wine, quite lengthy and complex." Drink 2019 - 2023+"
A super-value Chardonnay from Nelson: creamy-soft, bright acid and a delight. Gluggable...and organic!

Askerne Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2018

4 Stars Wine State
4 Stars Michael Cooper

"Apple pie, toasty oak hints, preserved lemon aromas with great body, texture, freshness and length, the 2018 Askerne Chardonnay was entirely barrel fermented and aged. 2018 was a great year for Chardonnay at Askerne and our Estate Chardonnay is testament to this. While this wine is best drunk in its youth, it will continue to develop for several years if well cellared. Can be enjoyed alone or with a wide variety of dishes and light meals." Askerne

"Up front and intensely aromatic, the wine shows feijoa, passionfruit, kaffir lime and lemon peel characters on the nose, leading to a succulent palate that is wonderfully weight and persistent. It is fabulously drinkable with pristine fruit intensity backed by refreshing acidity. At its best: now to 2021."

Black Barn Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2017

This plush 2017 Sauvignon is a real stunner and a great example of premium Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc. This generous wine is normally only available at the cellar door and from Black Barn's restaurant. Its lovely palate weight, classic zestiness, tangy citrus flavours and long lush finish really stand out. A wine of this class, at this price is seldom on the market. A wine of this class, at this price is seldom on the market. If a change from the acidity of the Marlborough version is needed or just a change full stop, this great buy is it.

D'Arenberg McLaren Vale The Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne 2018

New release. As stunning and reliable as ever.
Silver NZ International Wine Show 2019

An incredibly fragrant nose full of sweet apricot and gingery spice. The palate is luscious and generous and has great acid which tightens the wine, adding freshness and a clean crisp finish. Slight pithy feel which builds on the spice notes. Lovely as a fresh stand-alone drink that exhibits some mouthfeel, or equally well adapted to enjoying with a range of foods from freshly shucked oysters through to spicy Thai style dishes.

One of our best-selling dessert wines in a very long time. Not only is it great to drink it must be the best Sticky deal in years and years and years.

Terra Sancta Bannockburn Central Otago Rose 2019

Classic Status Michael Coopers Wine Companion & Classic Status: New Zealand’s First Ever Classic Rose
"Nothing looks better on a summer table than this wine. Bright, memorable and elegant this Rosé has an ethereal texture, great energy and balance. With a tease of sweetness, bright red fruit, mineral and distinctive spice, it carries long and finishes dry on the palate. Unlike many Rosés this is not a light red wine disguised in pink ...this is 100% Pinot Noir Rose made with care. Seriously delicious."

Terra Sancta Bannockburn Central Otago 2017 Pinot Noir

4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper's 2020 Wine Companion
“A truly exciting wine. Handpicked from the same blocks that produce our rare single block wines (Slapjack Block, Jackson's Block, Shingle Beach) as well from a few other select vines on the estate, this is the truest expression of the soul of the vineyard. The fragrance is direct from the lavender and thyme that ribbon the vineyard. The flavours are luxurious dark cherries, fresh raspberries, and first picked plums, the finish long and silky..." Terra Sancta
"...Deep ruby, with a slightly earthy bouquet, it is fresh and concentrated, with strong, vibrant, cherry, plum and spice flavours., good power through the palate and a well-structured finish." M Cooper

Grey Ridge Central Otago Pinot Noir 2015

Silver Medal Bragato Wine Competition
Small production, so not a regular on the show circuit. We cannot recommend this stunner enough.
Since first promoting this wine 4 months ago its popularity has soared. Once tried its irresistible charmers have won over so so many.
At this amazing price it sits in the same price bracket as the supermarket main stays: Roaring Meg, Rua and Devils Staircase all instantly come to mind. In our opinion it leaves them in the dust.
Medium in colour, with a nose of cherry ripeness which leads to a beautifully balanced palate which seduces and charms. Classical Central Otago Pinot Noir.
Perfect at this time of the year. This wine is charging out the door.

Awawhiti Chiefly River Central Otago Pinot Noir 2018

This wine has had some super press under a different guise. It has been said of this wine.
"A lovely attractive complexity with a core of mineral messages with crushed stone then aromas of plum and raspberry with some toasty vanilla wood moments. Dry with flavours that reflect the nose, fine dusty tannins and light chalky edge. A really fine balanced wine reflecting sight, soil and winemaker stamp of quality. Well made, drink now and through 2025.” -91 Points Cameron Douglas
Judges Comments: New World Wine Awards
"Central Otago has lots of quite different sub-regions, like this one from Alexandra, which makes it one of the world’s southernmost vineyards. The 20 ha Immigrant’s Vineyard, named after owners Roland and Lucienne van der Wal, who arrived in New Zealand in 1986, is predominately planted in Pinot Noir. The wines are named Ruru in recognition of New Zealand's native owl, which inhabits the area. This is a wine with rich dark cherry flavours and a silky textured mouthfeel – classic Central Otago Pinot!"

Corte Giara Allegrini Prosecco 2016 Dry

This is a much beloved classic of Italian winemaking and fantastic value.Characteristically dry, this complex sparkling wine has all the acidity that you want in a Prosecco, as well as a hint of coffee right at the end to keep things interesting.
Prosecco is perfect for any party or celebration. It is from a fantastic Italian Vintage and looks brilliant too.
As Moet Chandon is to Champagne, Nautilus Cuvee Brut is to Methode Champenoise so Corte Giara Allegrini is to Prosecco. These Venetian winemakers are one of the best known producers of Italian sparkling, with good reason.
