The wine store with passion

Wine drinking has a very, very important rule: drink what you like! But never be afraid to try something new or different. Wine drinking should be fun, free of much of the garbage that interferes with the rest of our lives. It should be a catalyst for social intercourse. It should be pleasurable and memorable, it should be savoured and discussed, it should be fun.

Maison Noire Hawkes Bay Syrah 2015

$19.99

4 Stars Michael Cooper
4 Stars Raymond Chan

"Grown in the Gimblett Gravels, the deeply coloured 2015 vintage (4*) was matured for 16 months in French oak barrels (30 per cent new.) Floral, mouthfilling and supple, it has good concentration of plum and black pepper flavours, fresh but not high acidity and gentle tannins. Still very youthful, it's well worth cellaring to 2019+."
In our view it is very hard to get a really well balanced, deeply varietal smooth Syrah from the Hawkes Bay that does make your wallet cry. This is such a wine. A HUGE hit at our Maison Noire tasting. Gulliame Thomas, is a Frenchman and part of the winemaking team at Alpha Domus when they started making the Barnstormer Syrah, it too , is a great Syrah whose price has steady increased. This wine is in the same league, just a fraction of the price.

Sweet red and black cherry flavours show on the palate together with savoury mushroom and tobacco. A medium bodied, complex wine which has ample fine grained, mouth coating tannin and a long lingering finish."

Moutere Hills Nelson 2017 Pinot Gris

The 2015 version of this was a real crowd favourite. The 2017 is back to that lovely style, off-dry with aromas of pear and stone-fruits. A clean and crisp palate with flavours of white nectarine and pear. Lightly oaked with a luscious full-bodied mouth-feel and long finish.
A Real gem.

"Includes a dash of barbera. Starts ticking the boxes with its bright colour, and continues to do so through the fragrant, gently spicy dark berry bouquet, thence the medium-bodied palate. It derives its quality through its freshness, the purity of its fruit flavours, and its supple mouthfeel."

Phantom Lord is the offspring of somewhat confused parentage. In the way of stouts, itís black as tar, with an opulent roast and chocolate notes. But itís hopped like an American Style Pale Ale. Then fermented with English Ale yeast. All of which results in a splendidly complex array of deep, satisfying maltiness balanced with a fruity, resinous hop aroma and flavour." - Brewery

Silver Hawkes Bay Wine Show 2017
4 Stars Michael Cooper's Wine Companion 2018.

"Enjoyable young, the 2016 vintage was hand-harvested from four sites...barrel-fermented and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green with a fragrant, slightly buttery bouquet. It is weighty with rich peachy flavours, showing good complexity and a creamy-smooth finish. Drink now or cellar."
Year after year this super wine is an absolute winner. The 2016 is no exception. In fact it might be one of the very best yet. Bright citrus fruit, mealy complexity and wonderfully approachable very early, it has the ability to age for a very long time. 2016 was a super Hawkes Bay vintage and it shows in this wine.
When first tasted this wine with the Beach House Reserve Chardonnay's: The Levels and The Track from 2016 we were impressed with its quality,it was right up their with the big brothers that sell for over $30.00. This wine is extremely classy and will reward cellaring.

The nose is moderately full and deep with aromas of white and yellow stonefruits entwined with citrus fruits, along with nutty oak and hints of flint and minerals. The aromatics have a steely freshness. Medium-full bodied, the palate has a rounded but concentrated core of citrus fruits, white and yellow stonefruits, nutty oak and flint.
