The wine store with passion

Wine drinking has a very, very important rule: drink what you like! But never be afraid to try something new or different. Wine drinking should be fun, free of much of the garbage that interferes with the rest of our lives. It should be a catalyst for social intercourse. It should be pleasurable and memorable, it should be savoured and discussed, it should be fun.

A wine that sells out at the vineyards very smartly every year. Highly consistent and very, very drinkable. From the Defiance Vineyard on Felton Road, this is super Pinot Gris.

Beach House The Track Gimblett Gravels 2016 Chardonnay

4 1/2 Stars Michael Cooper Wine Companion 2018 Edition
Silver Bragato Wine Awards 2017
Silver AirNZ Wine Awards 2017

This is one of two Beach House Reserve Chardonnays. Traditionally this one takes a little longer to unfold its true character. It is now just starting to reveal itself. It will cellar from until 2023 or longer. It is one for the future.
Michael Cooper couldn't have said it better:
"The elegant, very youthful 2016 vintage was estate grown and hand-picked in Mere Road, fermented with indigenous yeast in French oak barrels (285 new), and mostly (755) given a softening malolactic fermentation. Light lemon/green, it has vibrant, grapefruit-like flavours, showing excellent delicacy and depth, subtle seasoning of oak, and impressive complexity and harmony. It's crying out for cellaring, open 2019+."

Domain Road Central Otago 2018 Rose

Each vintage we endeavour to make our Rosé with our trademark pale pink colour. This to us is the colour a Rosé should be. On the nose we have lifted aromas of strawberry, raspberry and even cranberry, along with hints of rose petal and cinnamon. The palate is dry, creamy and shows some complex flavours of berry fruits, pear and quince notes.
"Mouth filling dry style wine, medium bodied with good concentration, well balanced acidity and an attractive long, crisp, clean finish." Domain Road

Pirramimma McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Earlier in the year we promoted the outstanding 2013 vintage of this wine. The 2014 has just been released after spending 2 years in oak, then cellar aged.
The official information: The wine exhibits a bouquet of lifted black current, violet and mint with bramble notes and hints of cedar oak. With the palate showing intense briary blackberry, red current and spicy black plum flavours, with hints of quince, red capsicum and Kalamata olive. This powerful but elegant wine is framed by balanced tannins and subtle oak, finishing with great length.
This is our view: as good if not better than the Multi Gold 2013; more approachable early; loaded with an intensity and depth that is outstanding. Food Match: Grilled lamb, chicken salad, and pork tenderloin.

Beach House Gimblett Gravels Reserve Merlot 2015

Always the “must have” star of the range, this new release doesn't disappoint. It is loaded with charming, almost velvety tannins and a soft full elegant palate.
A master class in what generous, delicious Merlot should taste like.
It has all of three classics; berry, chocolate and ripe black plum elements, wrapped in a very classy package. Great now, will live a long and wonderful life.

"A wine that really does offer something for a large array of individuals, from someone purely interested in a nice drink to those seeking to explore the nuances of these “alternate” varieties. The Viognier certainly takes centre stage on the nose in the guise of stone fruits, candied ginger and florals. In the background...Marsanne adds slightly more exotic notes of green mango, hay and almond. The palate has a lovely medium bodied weight to it...Fruity and spicy yet dry make this an all occasions wine."

Nautilus Southern Valleys Marlborough Pinot Noir 2015

5 Stars 95/100 Bob Campbell MW
5 Stars Wine Orbit
10 Best Value International Pinot Noirs Wine Searcher

Dark fruits, hint of smoke with lovely oak and dark cherry are evident on the gorgeous nose. The palate is full, loaded with dark cherry notes with hints of chocolate and spice. Rich and juicy. It oozes class. It is a brilliant 'international interpretation' of this class grape variety: Its dimensions and style so beyond the region of its origin and sits comfortable among the best of many nations.
This is a serious Pinot Noir with serious potential. It is on the savoury side of the Pinot Noir spectrum. Some would say there is a strong made to be drunk with food element to its construction. Decanting will open this one up beautifully.
With its generosity of fruit and complexity it is sure to develop over the next 5-6 years.
To be voted as one of the ten best value Pinot Noirs in the world is no mean feat. It is huge recognition of this wine standing. I would be surprised if you could buy a Pinot Noir this good from Burgundy in France or that you'd get much change for $100.00 (if not a lot, lot more).

"Full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with slight purple hues...The nose is softly full and densely packed with aromas of savoury dark-red berry fruit melded with an amalgam of dried and dark herbs, hints of reductive earthy and mineral notes, unfolding elements of aromatic stalk, dark-red florals and raspberry liqueur. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich and sweet fruit flavours of dark-red berry fruit...The palate richness forms a fine core with good depth and linearity, and the fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin structure in the background...This is a rich and elegantly concentrated Pinot Noir with raspberry fruit and a thread of reduction, on a fine-textured palate with freshness. Match with duck and pork, lamb and beef over the next 4-5 years..."

"Wine is unrivalled in the world of beverages for the influence time and season have on its ever changing personality. Mulberry and plum give way to black olive, cedar and cinnamon; milk chocolate has evolved into dark chocolate, the serious type with lots of cocoa; and the sweet confectionary liquorice appears more like slightly salty Dutch liquorice. The tannins have taken on a chalky edge and the mouthfeel, whilst densely packed, feels much more streamlined...A Shiraz Viognier that will suit everyone from the most avid wine connoisseur seeking a thought provoking experience through to someone who just wants to enjoy a quality red wine with their barbecued steak."

Massena is an outstanding producer of wines that are beautifully crafted and fabulously funky.
This primitivo is a great example. Where the other featured wine in this email is a brilliant Italian this one evokes a more American feel. Zinfandel and Primitivo are one and the same in the eyes of many. This one is full, warm, deep, dark and stunning. Like Zinfandel it best suits drinking in its first three years of life.
