The wine store with passion

Wine drinking has a very, very important rule: drink what you like! But never be afraid to try something new or different. Wine drinking should be fun, free of much of the garbage that interferes with the rest of our lives. It should be a catalyst for social intercourse. It should be pleasurable and memorable, it should be savoured and discussed, it should be fun.

92/100 Huon Hooke The Real Review March 2018
91 Points Campbell Mattinson Wine Front

Massena is an outstanding producer of wines that are beautifully crafted and fabulously funky.
This primitivo is a great example. Where the other featured wine in this email is a brilliant Italian this one evokes a more American feel. Zinfandel and Primitivo are one and the same in the eyes of many. This one is full, warm, deep, dark and stunning. Like Zinfandel it best suits drinking in its first three years of life.

"Bright, light golden-hued straw-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim... Medium-full bodied, the palate has moderately rich flavours of savoury yellow stonefruits intermingling with nutty oak and mealy lees elements. The mouthfeel is lively with fresh, lacy acidity and the flavours flow with good energy along a light-textured line, leading to a soft finish of savoury fruits and nutty oak. This is a moderately rich and sweet fruited Chardonnay with savoury stonefruit, nutty oak and mealy notes on a lively palate..." Raymond Chan
This wine was reviewed on release, it has changed since then. Having tried it several times over the last six months I am amazed how much it has become user friendly. Rich style now leaps out of the glass. Great drinking. A crowd pleaser.

To start, we haven't tried it. We haven't had a chance it is literally just landed. From ship to warehouse, to us. With its record and their demand for this stunner over the last two vintages it won't last. Be quick.
Over the years we can say this about it. Powerful wine, red garnet colour with an intense fruity aroma and a velvety full taste.Great winter fare excellent with roasted and braised red meats and mature cheese.

Yalumba Barossa Paradox Shiraz 2015

95/100 Top 5 Gourmet Traveller Barossa Shiraz Tasting June 2018
94/100 Campbell Mattinson Wine Front

This wine is made in a different style to most from Barossa, think 'Rhone': French Oak, spice and lots and lots of class. After all it’s a 'Paradox'.
95/100 & Top 5 against all the Top Shiraz from the Barossa the Paradox was rated in the Top 5 and ahead of many of the big names at much higher price points. "2015 Yalumba Paradox is beginning to show development, which is adding complexity to its red fruits and spices. The flavours are rich, yet typically of Yalumba reds, the wine has a stylish balance and leaves the mouth fresh. “A rich bouquet,” Bennie said. “Ripe plum, choc-liquorice, sage, coffee grounds, Bonox and bergamot tea. Enticing, Barossa 101 scents. Concentrated, yet fresh to taste, inky berries, ferrous tannins, more tea-like character and liquid minerality to finish. Structured yet svelte, this feels like a serious wine, a touch elegant, yet with the brute lurking beneath." Gourmet Traveller Barossa Shiraz Tasting, June 2018

Marc Bredif Loire Classic Vouvray 2016

$26.99

We know Vouvray as Chenin Blanc. A noble and aristotic classic grape variety. Marc Bredif is one of the most famous of the Vouvray houses. Its history goes back to 1783, nearly as old as New Zealand.
The 2016 is a superb release. There is a hint of lanolin of the nose that features hints of pineapple, grapefruit and apple that carry on to its just off dry complex palate. The perfect alternative for Chardonnay and dry white lovers. Racy, yet firm, charming and very moreish.
One for now or the cellar.

"This complex blend showcases a great vintage on our Havelock North vineyard. Dark and brooding on the nose with black doris plum, aromatic jasmine and underlying mineral notes of graphite and tar. "The Real Review...96 points.
This outstanding wine is half the price of Vasse's top chardonnay, Heytesbury, and nearly as good. Intense grapefruit, lemon aromas laced with toast from oak, the palate bright and precise with wonderful regional style and balance, and loads of charm. Drink now to nine years. Drink with scallops with spring onion and ginger."
"...The continuing refinement of Vasse Felix's chardonnays is on show in this excellent wine. Lightly scented aromas of char and grapefruit with a lemony minerally influence. The palate is light bodied, but with deep intensity. Tight and controlled with a minerally finish. Love that white peach edginess that carries through to the finish."

"Full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with slight purple hues...The nose is softly full and densely packed with aromas of savoury dark-red berry fruit melded with an amalgam of dried and dark herbs, hints of reductive earthy and mineral notes, unfolding elements of aromatic stalk, dark-red florals and raspberry liqueur. Medium-bodied, the palate has rich and sweet fruit flavours of dark-red berry fruit...The palate richness forms a fine core with good depth and linearity, and the fruit is supported by fine-grained tannin structure in the background...This is a rich and elegantly concentrated Pinot Noir with raspberry fruit and a thread of reduction, on a fine-textured palate with freshness. New Release.
We have promoted this wine over many, many vintages. The one thing that stands out is its absolute consistent quality. James Halliday has given many of those vintages 5 Stars; others have won Gold medals: all have shone. 2017 was another super South Australian vintage. This wine reflects that.
Initial spice notes on both the nose and palate are backed up with a rich, full palate. Lots of dark chocolate, mocha and dark berry flavours beam through.
It is sure to please. Another massively good one at a superb price.

Wines from this region are usually very expensive and take a very long time to hit their peak. Here we have a wine, due the character of the vintage, that is early drinking, spicy, fresh and charming. “ light on its feet and early drinking” were words used by The winecellar.com. To interpret that: drinking earlier than usual (now and over the next 10 years rather than not ready for another 3 years and drinking well over the next 20 years).
